Figure 1. Feeling blue, being angry and frustraed – Myranda.

For me what’s important is that there’s a now. That I can draw a now, do you know what I mean? Which is different, which is happy and coping and moving forward and not feeling constrained and also um, dirty and ashamed.

Most of the sessions took around an hour and 20 minutes. Each session was recorded using a digital voice recorder and later transcribed so that digital files were available for independent analysis and MM could focus on the interviewee rather than on making notes (Polgar & Thomas, 2000). Transcription became part of the analytic process and the style of transcript reflected the type of analysis used (Elliott, 2005). For this study, transcripts were ‘clean’, as they were easy to read, but retained some extra verbal data such as ‘laughter’, ‘tears’, ‘umms’ and ‘errs’; and thus retained some of the emotional elements of the story (Elliott, 2005). As feminist methodology incorporates the experience and feelings of the researcher (Edwards, 1993), MM’s questions and comments were also retained in the transcripts. Also, as qualitative researchers are asked to ‘make ourselves visible in our texts’ (Lincoln & Denzin, 2000, p. 1053), the first author’s own drawings and transcript excerpts are included in the results section (Ellis & Bochner, 2000; Jones, 2005).
